She stood up, panting. The black and red world turned round her and she found herself sitting on the hard rock again, but still staring upward.

The sun was perceptibly lower in the sky. There was less life, but as if to compensate, the rocks and stones were breaking forth in an efflorescence of shapes and forms that echoed nothing she could remember seeing anywhere...

The land reaching into that shadow, north of the road, was overgrown with the strange crystal flower patterns that she was now used to seeing, and warped in other ways. In some places it reared up into shapes like animals, or human faces or limbs, or distorted machine parts.
